Abstract/Summary
This report outlines the results of archaeological work undertaken during the pre-commencement stage of the of the Lion Salt Works. The development scheme covers an area that includes the whole of the scheduled monument with the exception of the Coronation Salt Store and an area outside the monument. Approximately two thirds forms part of the scheduled monument. The remainder of the site lies outside the area of the monument but is to be considered to form part of the contiguous monument. As the majority of the site lies within a scheduled monument the site as a whole should be considered nationally significant.
This report includes a description of all previous below-ground archaeological work undertaken from 1993 to 2009; a summary of the results of all the evaluation trenches and test pits previously reported and the results of a number of pieces of below-ground archaeological work which include a series of test pits undertaken prior to geo-technical work, infiltration test for soak-aways and a series of test pits undertaken to investigate the structural foundations of the historic core.
This report also includes description of historic building recording of the historic core south and Red Lion Inn undertaken in advance, during and after propping and work of the scheduled monument and work previously undertaken during the 2009 enabling works that involved the dismantling of Stove and Pan House 5.
