Title A Survey of the Walling Lands of Wich Malbank, September 2nd, 1624 (Transcript)
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1987

Abstract/Summary

A transcript, produced by George Twigg in 1987, detailing the salt houses in Nantwich from an original document dating to 1624. The original is held in the Cholmondeley Estate Papers at the Cheshire Record Office (CRO ref DCH/Y/10/1). A late 17th century transcript (circa 1670?) of the document is also held in the Cholmondeley collection (DCH/K/5/1). The two texts are largely identical, but when the later text differs from the original, this version is given in brackets. The Roman numerals at the beginning of each entry denotes the size of the salt house in terms of the number of leads. Most salt houses contained 'six leads', but these could be divided into threes, the smallest salt making unit. The 1624 document also contains an account of 'The Customs of Walling and Making of Salt in Wich-Malbank' and 'The Rulers Oath'. See also SCH2118 for maps of the Walling Lands or salt houses reconstructed by George Twigg using the 1624 document and other map evidence.
