Author/Originator
Date/Year 1991

Abstract/Summary

Report on discoveries from St Anne's Lane including a cremation burial found in 1982, a quernstone, a Roman timber plank tank excavated in 1985, and three groups of Roman finds collected from the area after the discovery of the tank. It concludes that St. Anne's Lane is unlikely to be an area of Roman settlement which probably lay on the opposite side of the river. The presence of cremations, burnt bone and charcoal suggests an extra-mural Roman cemetery, whilst the presence of briquetage in the pottery, the timber-lined tank and the proximity of the site to salt pans suggest it was an area of salt works.
