Abstract/Summary
Preliminary excavations of the promontory fort at Maiden Castle, Bickerton, were undertaken in the summer of 1934. Further excavations in the summer of 1935 aimed at a thorough examination of the entrance to the camp. The work done permits a detailed description of the ground plan of the entrance, of the structure of the defences comprising that entrance and of an attempt to elucidate the history of those defences. This report will deal with those topics in the order given, and will conclude with a consideration of the relationship between Maiden Castle, Bickerton and the related earthworks of adjacent parts of Britain.
