Abstract/Summary
The report describes a strip and record exercise carried out over the footprint of the demolished Stamford Lodge, a 19th-century building on Altrincham Road. The site and surrounding grounds are being re-developed to accommodate the new water mass Spectometery Centre. The work represented the final phase in a programme of archaeological work that started with a desk-based assessment and was followed by trial trenching on the site of the proposed roundabout to the north of the lodge and recording of the lodge prior to demolition. Little trace of the documented activity on the site prior to the construction of the 19th-century lodge was recognised, apart from a single pit and some ditches, but the footprint of the lodge and remains of ancillary buildings were recorded.
