Abstract/Summary
Part of the North wall, Chester, was excavated in 1990 by T.J.Strickland, to investigate structural problems. The Roman wall and turf rampart was exposed in section. The rampart comprised layers of various kinds of soil, some sandier, some more clayey and others of darker organic material (turf, charcoal, wood. Pollen samples were taken in conjunction with soil sampling. Analysis of the samples demonstrated that the turves had been cut in an area of wood pasture, probably along the banks of the River Dee.
