Abstract/Summary
Excavations ahead of the construction of a new primary school at Stockton Heath, Warrington, provided the opportunity to examine Roman remains flanking the major Roman arterial road running north to the important settlement at Wilderspool. Structures, ovens and cremations, dating primarily to the second century AD, were excavated and road construction examined. There is nothing in the archaeological record to suggest anything other than agricultural activity after the Roman period. By the early twentieth century allotments occupy the site and these are later incorporated into the school grounds as playing fields. Widespread destruction to the Roman remains took place during the Second World War through the systematic excavation of twelve air-raid shelters; following the War the site reverted to school recreation grounds.
