Abstract/Summary

Trial trenching demonstrated that whilst well-preserved archaeological deposits survived in the north-east corner of the site and were associated with the Roman building known to lie to the east in the car park, across much of the site sand quarrying, the excavation of the canal, and the filled-in course of the Lubrook meant that archaeological deposits were unlikely to be present. The original topography is masked by the extensive dumping of 20th-century waste which appears to pre-date the construction of the school. In the event of re-development, further mitigation will be required in the sensitive areas which will consist of a preservation in sity strategy or, if this is not possible, further excavation work.
