Source/Archive record SCH6844 - Land off Queens Drive, Nantwich, Cheshire: Archaeological Desk Based Assessment

This desk-based assessment considers land approximately 9.8 hectares in extent to the south of Queens Drive, Nantwich, Cheshire. In accordance with government policy (Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment), this assessment draws together the available archaeological, historic, topographic and land-use information in order to clarify the heritage significance and archaeological potential of the site. There are no designated assets (Scheduled Monuments, Listed Buildings, Registered Parks and Gardens or Registered Battlefields) or undesignated archaeological assets within the proposed development site boundary. Three listed structures on the Shropshire Union Canal lie immediately west of the site and a Registered Park and Garden lies a short distance north-west of the site. However, there will be no impact on the significance of these assets and any visual impact on the Listed Buildings can be mitigated through a set-back development from the western boundary of the site. Due to the modern development of semi-detached houses immediately to the north of the site, no visual impact on the setting of the Registered Park and Garden is anticipated. This desk-based assessment has established that the site has low/nil potential for any archaeological evidence from the prehistoric, Roman and Saxon/Early Medieval periods, and a low potential for sub-surface archaeological deposits from the Medieval/Post-Medieval period. In light of the above, it is concluded that the archaeological potential of the site is minimal and therefore no mitigation measures are required to address archaeological issues on the site.
