Abstract/Summary

On the protected scheduled monument of Helsby Hillfort, Cheshire (centring on NGR SJ49257542), during work to improve footpath access and consolidate areas of erosion, an archaeological watching brief was completed during February and March 2012. Initially, ahead of ground disturbance, two trial pits were excavated to assist in the identification of sensitive archaeological levels and to establish a safe working depth to ensure no archaeology was disturbed during the works. During the watching brief, a potentially early field boundary in the southern part of the pathway route was examined, but in general terms the improvement works disturbed no archaeology of significance. Imported foundation material used for pathway construction came from development sites in Chester and, unwittingly, this resulted in the potential contamination of areas close the footpath with imported archaeological material. A photographic survey of all activities associated with the project was also completed.
