Watching brief maintained during insertion of new gas main on Wheelock Street, Middlewich. Along most of line and in associated trenches little of interest noted. In Trench 5, however, opposite the Vaults public house, a dark-stained sand with possible cobbling and degraded bone was noted at a depth of 1.2m. Although it appeared to be under natural sand, it may represent an early road surface but, if so, the date remains obscure.
