Abstract/Summary

n January 2012 Archaeological Research Services Ltd were commissioned by Mott Macdonald to undertake an archaeological evaluation at the site of the proposed Waters Mass Spectrometry Headquarters, Stamford Lodge, Wilmslow. Three evaluation trenches were distributed from east to west, broadly equidistant from each other, towards the centre of the development along the intended route of the access road. A ditch containing a ceramic land drain and a residual find of a Bronze Age flint knife in pristine condition were discovered in Trench 1. With the exception of a second land drain in Trench 2 no other features or evidence of land drains were identified. Bronze axe heads found within East Cheshire confirm that there was Bronze Age activity within the wider environs of the site. The discovery of the Bronze Age flint knife means that the Stamford Lodge site can now be included as part of the landscape which was exploited during this period of prehistory.
