Abstract/Summary
RPS Planning and Development have been commissioned to produce a desk based archeological assessment of Shavington Triangle, Shavington, Cheshire East, in order to assess the archaeological potential of the area in advance of development.
The proposed development area is located centred to the south of Newcastle Road, south of the village of Shavington, itself south of Crewe, at NGR SJ 6978 5115. The proposed development area is bounded by Newcastle Road to the north, the rear gardens of houses bounding Dig Lane to the southwest and the rear gardens of houses bounding Stock Lane to the southeast. Much of the proposed development area is currently under arable, although there are also areas of
pastureland.
The proposed development area does not lie within or adjacent to a Conservation Area and does not contain any Listed Buildings or Scheduled Monuments. The closest statutorily protected feature is Hough Manor, a Grade II listed building located some 600 metres south east of the proposed development area. There is no intervisibility with the proposed development area and there would be no effect on the setting of the listed building. The nearest Registered Park and Garden is Crewe Hall, located some 3.2 kilometres northeast of
the proposed development area. The nearest Registered Battlefield site is that of the Battle of Nantwich, fought during the English Civil War. This is located some 5.5 kilometres west of the proposed development area. The nearest Conservation Area is Wybunbury, located some 600 metres south of the proposed development area. None of these assets or their settings would be
affected by the proposed development.
No other listed building, Scheduled Monument, Listed Building Conservation Area or other statutorily protected or registered feature, locally important building, or their settings, would be affected by the proposed development. Although under pasture, no earthworks were visible on the ground or on aerial photographs,
neither are any indicated by the HER. No evidence for upstanding or surface archaeological remains is recorded or was observed during the site visit. However, it is concluded that the proposed development area has a medium potential for the survival of below-ground archaeological remains of Roman date, associated with the nearby remains of the salt making industry. Any such remains would not necessarily represent the salt
making industry in themselves but may comprise agricultural or settlement remains.
