Abstract/Summary

This Rapid Landscape Assessment focuses on the line of a proposed ha-ha within Eaton Park (Chester) and its impact on the broad ridge and furrow there. The proposed ha-ha crosses the well-preserved Roman road, but a break in the ha-ha at that point and the provision of gates to preserve the archaeological feature has already been agreed prior to this assessment. There is therefore no further discussion offered here specific to the Roman Road in isolation, though its relationship with the ridge and furrow is discussed. There are also issues at Eaton relating to the location and archaeology of the settlements associated with the lost place-names Eaton Green and Figdale (reputedly near Eaton Stud), and the original Eaton itself, meaning ‘river-settlement’ (Dodgson, 1969-70, 148-51), though none are thought likely to underlie the proposed ha-ha.
