Abstract/Summary

Desk-based assessment carried out in connection with proposals for the re-development of the Greenalls Distillery site on the east side of the Wilderspool Causeway for residential use. The report considers the undoubted archaeological potential of the site, givemn that it is situated between two known areas of Roman settlement, but also considers the past industrial use, which is likely to have damaged or removed archaeological deposits across parts of the site. Bore hole information is also considered and shows that there are deep accumuilations of recent material across significant parts of the site. The proposed construction method will also involve the importation of large amounts of material onrot the site, prior to construction work, which will raise the ground level by up to 2m. The above leads to a recommendation that, across parts of the site, archaeological mitigation is unlikely to be required but in other parts there will be a case for further mitigation.
