Source/Archive record SCH5375 - Ince Resource Recovery Park: Metal Detector Survey

A metal-detector survey was undertaken in 2010 on the site of the proposed Ince Resource Recovery Park. The programme of fieldwork included the systematic collection of sub-surface metal artefacts as an indicator of past site use and/or the potential presence of sub-surface archaeological features and structures. All 36 plots within the application site boundary were subject to metal-detector survey and the resulting assemblage comprises 392 objects. The largest group of finds were fragments of ordnance dating from the Second World War (153 fragments), allowing for a unique insight into anti-aircraft shells. Coins and tokens were the second most common group (107 items). There was no prehistoric material and only two possible Roman finds - a Roman brooch and a potential Roman key. This material was followed by a long hiatus during which nothing was deposited on the site until the sixteenth century. No concentrations of artefacts recovered have indicated areas of the site as requiring further intrusive archaeological field assessment.
