Abstract/Summary

The route of a 33kV cable lay has been proposed between Hole House Farm, Warmingham and Crewe Grid Substation. This report contains results of cartographic, archaeological, and documentary research into the site undertaken by L – P : Archaeology on behalf of SP Energy Networks. The aim of this assessment is to assess the potential for archaeology on the site, its condition and the impact the development may have on any potential archaeology. The site does not contain any listed buildings or scheduled monuments, however one listed building and two scheduled monuments are located within 1km of the proposed route. It is not thought there was any significant activity on the site or its immediate surroundings dating to before the Post Medieval period. Activity is recorded from the late 19th century as Crewe developed. Coppenhall Junction, a railway junction dating to the 1840's, is located to the north of the route. The southern section of the route lies within a road layout associated with the 20th century expansion of Crewe, and passes the Bentley Motors factory, which is recorded as producing Merlin engines during World War II. It is unlikely that archaeological deposits survive any previous construction works, such as the roads and railways. However, as there has been no prior development along the route adjacent to Spring Farm this area has a higher potential for surviving archaeological deposits. DOC REF:
