| Author/Originator | West Yorkshire Archaeological Services |
| Report Number | R2989 |
| Date/Year | 2010 |
Abstract/Summary
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 64 hectares was carried out
along the preferred route of the A556 Environmental Improvement (Bowdon to Knutsford).
Anomalies caused by utility pipes, field drains and former field boundaries, ploughing and
modern activity (possibly associated with the construction of the M56 motorway) have been
identified. No anomalies of obvious archaeological potential have been identified although
some of unknown origin have been noted, including the possible site of a brick clamp or some
other structure associated with brick manufacture and a cluster of possible pit-type
anomalies close to the A56(Watling Street). On the basis of the geophysical survey the
archaeological potential of the preferred route is considered to be fairly low confirming the
conclusions of a previous survey and desk-based assessment
