Abstract/Summary
A report of an archaeological evaluation of the cobbled Market Square in Sandbach was undertaken by Matrix Archaeology during November 2006 on behalf of the Sandbach partnership, in advance of proposed development in the square.
The location of the Market Square is almost certainly that of the Medieval market. Although the actual fabric of the cobbles is nineteenth century, there are road lines present which probably represent early highways through the town, which existed during the Medieval period or earlier. It is highly probable that archaeologically significant deposits will be encountered immediately beneath the surface of the cobbled areas.
