Abstract/Summary
A watching brief of landscaping operations at the Water Tower Gardens led to the discovery of a modest collection of re-used architectural stonework and funerary memorials dating from the Roman period through to the nineteenth century. The work also revealed a section of a covered drainage culvert which had once passed beneath the City Walls following an east-west alignment and probably of early post-Medieval date. As the operations progressed it became apparent that the bank supporting the flight of steps leading down from the Walls to the Gardens is the ancient river bank, here formed of boulder clay.
