Abstract/Summary

Following on from a geophysical survey in 2004 (ECH4214/SCH4739), an archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land adjacent to Crewe Green Link Road, Cheshire, in March 2005. The evaluation comprised three 50m by 2m trenches centred on anomalies identified by the geophysical surveys. Most of the anomalies were shown to correlate with post medieval field boundaries, however, in trench 1, evidence of a deep hillwash was recorded and could represent an infilled quarry or similar. Pottery fragments found on the ground surface around the trenches date to the sixteenth to early eighteenth century and could imply there was settlement near by. Their unabraded nature suggests that they had not been disturbed since their deposition. The evaluation identified a relict plough soil suggesting the area had been used for arable cultivation. The earliest evidence was a single fragment of Roman pottery.
