Abstract/Summary

Stratascan were commissioned by Oxford Archaeology North to carry out a geophysical survey of three areas around Crewe Green in 2004. This survey forms part of an archaeological investigation being carried out by Oxford Archaeology North prior to development of the new link road. A magnetic scanning reconnaissance survey was carried out over 12.5ha of agricultural land near Crewe Green, Cheshire. The site was separated into three areas. Highest areas of magnetic activity were found to the north of Area 1, and to the north of Area 3. Area 2 showed a relatively low abundance of magnetic features with the exception of a zone of magnetic debris to the north. A detailed magnetometry survey was carried out in targeted regions of all three areas. Positive linear anomalies were found in all these areas, being particularly prominent in Area 1. Circular and curvilinear anomalies were also picked out in several of the areas. The linear features in all three areas seem to share the same orientation. This may indicate a connection between these anomalies and may suggest they are of similar origin. It is possible that this origin is archaeological.
