Source/Archive record SCH4729 - Buildings to the Rear of Nos 74, 76 and 78 Lawton Street, Congleton; an Archaeological and Historical Survey of late 18th and 19th Century Workers' Cottages.

The cottages to the rear of numbers 74, 76 and 78 lawton Street lie at the eastern end of the historic medieval core of Congleton at the top of a northward facing slope at 95m AOD. This area lies within the Congleton Town Centre Conservation Area. The site comprises one three storey brick-built structure and two, two storey, brick buldings to the rear of properties fronting the northern side of Lawton Street. The standing buildings within the study area date from the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Building C appears to be the earliest and was constructed a a pair of silk weaver's cottages in the late 18th century. Buildoing B was built as a dwelling shortly before 1845, whilst building A was built as a dwelling in the period 1845-73. Alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries included the blocking of doorways and windows and the incorporation of the eastern dwelling of Building C with No 78 Lawton Street.
