Abstract/Summary
From August to December 2003, following on from a programme of evaluation and archaeological monitoring, a programme of archaeological works was implemented in areas of Chester Business Park. This consisted principally of two open-area strips and one trial trench. Significant Roman archaeological remains were encountered including the remanants of structures, a road, three large pits likely to be the remians of wells or water-holes, one of which is of late Iron-Age date, and a Romano-British field system. Finds from across the site largely date from the first or second centuries, although some later Romano-British pottery and some pre-Roman pottery was also recovered. Among the most notable artefacts recovered from the site there were timbers from two of the wells, quern stones, a glass bead, a slate with an inscription and a small amount of late Iron Age pottery. Romano-British pottery and other ceramic materials such as amphora and mortaria were also recovered from across the site. There is a lack of excavated rural Romano-British sites in the north west of England, a fact which increases the significance of this project.
