Abstract/Summary

A geophysical survey was undertaken in December 2003 on land to the east of Middlewich in advance of proposed clay extraction. The site, centred at SJ 726660, consists of eleven fields, an area of some 60 hectares, surrounding Kinderton Lodge. The land is mostly improved grassland. Desk-based research done in 2002 revealed no known archaeological sites within the application area, although Roman Middlewich lies immediately to the west, and also, documentary evidence suggests the presence of a deer park in the area. The magnetic background was extremely flat across the whole site, probably a consequence of the composition of the clay soils, accordingly the results were disappointing in archaeological terms. The majority of the anomalies recorded were caused by either ridge and furrow cultivation or in-filled clay extraction pits.
