Source/Archive record SCH4496 - Clayhanger Hall, Crewe, Cheshire: Report on an Archaeological Evaluation

An archaeological evaluation undertaken between 8th and 11th September 2003. A total of twenty trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed land fill site; and were located to assess the archaeological implications of the development. The evaluation investigated a number of landscape features including field boundaries, ridge and furrow marks and clay pits in order to record the sub surface profile and to recover dating evidence. However, no dating evidence was recovered. Five trenches were located on the western side of the area in order to search for evidence of salt workings along the edge of the Fowle Brook. No evidence of such activity was found. An auger core was made to characterise a depression at the north edge of the woodland. This is considered to be a clay pit backfilled with rubble and subsequently covered over with leaf litter from the overhanging tree cover.
