Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken between November 2002 to March 2003 on land between Mill Street, Pickford Street and Lower Exchange Street, Macclesfield. It was undertaken in three phases during groundworks for the construction of a new bus interchange. The work demonstrated that later development and disturbance had removed evidence of earlier use of the site. A few isolated pockets of earlier plough or garden soil were preserved on the slope down to the Bollin; these produced a small quantitiy of pottery dating to the medieval and early post medieval periods. This evidence indicates that the area lay on the edge of the settlement and was most likely occupied by fields or small gardens during the medieval period.
