Abstract/Summary

A watching brief and archaeological evaluation were undertaken in 2002 in support of the development of a new pipeline through Cheshire. The watching brief occurred along the length of the pipeline; Route 1 ran for a distance of circa 4km starting at Five Crosses, near Frodsham, to a reservoir adjacent to Sunnybank Farm, Manley. A further stretch, Route 2, was located to the south, running for circa 3.5km from Station Road, Delamere, to a reservoir south of Sidebottom Farm. The pipeline traversed several areas of archaeological interest, such as an area of prehistoric flints recovered near Harrold Edge, also it lay in the vicinity of the Severn Lows Barrow group. Post medieval activity was recorded in a number of locations, notably near the New Pale deer park boundary, also the discovery of a cottage/small holding near Sidebottom Farm. An investigation on the small holding was undertaken in the form of survey and an evaluation. Buried remains of a cottage and associated outbuildings were recorded dating to the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.
