Abstract/Summary

Continuation of a programme of archaeological evaluation initiated in 1993 in advance of the development of residential housing along the west side of King's Street, Middlewich. The 1993 work identified the exact location and plan of a Roman fort (1080/1/0). The work done in 1998-1999 comprised the following:- - Evaluation and watching brief for the laying of a sewer in OS Field 3353 undertaken in June 1998 to September 1998. - Watching brief for the laying of a sewer link for the housing development in OS Field 2981 along the southern edge of Harbutt's Field, the location of the Roman fort. Given the fort is a scheduled monument, scheduled monument consent was required. The watching brief occurred between April and May 1999. - Watching brief, undertaken in March 1999, of housing development works in the former Builder's Yard site imbetween the fort to the west and King's Street to the east. The results obtained have helped to further understand the date, nature and extent of Roman activity around Harbutt's Field and King's Street.
