Source/Archive record SCH4391 - 10-12 Caughall Road, Upton, Chester: Archaeological Evaluation

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in 2002 of land at 10-12 Caughall Road, Upton, in advance of a proposed housing development. One of the aims was to ascertain whether a cluster of Roman practice camps in the vicinity extended into the proposed development area. The site comprised two large, detached late nineteenth centurhy houses and gardens, a total of 0.8ha. A metal detector survey was conducted resulting in the recovery of 70 metal objects of mostly modern date. Ten trenches were then excavated, each 1.55m by 140m. Across the site the topsoil was consistently circa 0.35m deep and was found to overlie brown-yellow clay. Modern land drains were identified along with several natural features which are thought to be ice wedges. No archaeological features were identified.
