Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was conducted by the University of Manchester Archaeological Unit along a pipeline corridor running between Wilmslow (SJ 8460 8181) and Hazel Grove (GSJ 9390 8595). Observations were made of archaeological features previously discovered by UMAU, whilst a further examination was made of the pipeline easement following topsoil removal and during the excavation of the pipe trench. Surveillance yielded two archaeological anomalies which were previously unknown including a circular feature and two spreads of industrial refuse. The circular feature is suspected to be associated with a late 18th century coal yard which was sited near Norbury Brook, whilst the spreads industrial waste are also thought to be linked to mining activities. An area considered to have housed a Roman military installation produced no material dating to this period.
