Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during ground disturbance works in relation to the construction of an access road for Fishpool Lane sand extraction site, Delamere at Ottersbank Farm. The watching brief monitored the works related to the stripping of topsoil and the excavation of weighbridge load cell pits and a pit for a klargester and undertook a rapid survey of the excavated subsoil for artefacts of archaeological significance. Archaeological deposits of Post-Medieval date were observed in the form of ploughsoils, and the base of a field boundary wall which was located adjacent to the Ottersbank Farm drive/Fishpool Lane junction. A small pit of indeterminate date was also recorded in the weighbridge/klargester area. It was demonstrated that three 42" water mains crossed the access road at the point where it reached Fishpool Lane. The line of these pipes would suggest that they had been cut through the side of the largest barrow when installed in the 1930s.
