Source/Archive record SCH4255 - St. Mary and All Saints Church, Great Budworth, Cheshire: Archaeological Excavation Report

A small-scale archaeological excavation was undertaken in October 1998 at the Church of St Mary and All Saints, Great Budworth, near Northwich, in support of installation of new storm drainage. The church is mentioned in the Domesday Survey and incorporates, as its earliest features, a stone altar and benches of probable thirteenth century date in the South Chapel. Its ground plan is typical of the fourteenth century, although it appears to have been remodelled in the late fifteenth century. The west tower dates from the early part of the sixteenth century. The soak-aways and main pipe trenches comprising the storm drainage were archaeologically excavated. The cemetery soils were of comparatively recent date and existed to considerable depths in the churchyard. Despite excavation to depths in excess of 1.2m no early deposits were encountered. Some human bone was found, but no articulated skeletons were present in the excavated area.
