Source/Archive record SCH4202 - Archaeological Evaluation at King Street Roman Road, Stretton, nr Warrington.

Report produced in February 1990 detailing the results of an archaeological evaluation investigating King Street Roman road at Stretton, near Warrington in advance of proposed landscaping works. The excavation recorded a more westerly line for the road than that shown on the Ordnance Survey maps. The agger was 11-12m wide and consisted of a degraded surface of small pebbles set in an orange-brown sandy loam 70-110mm deep, which sealed a surface of grey silty sand. Pollen samples from the sand surface indicated a local alder or alder-oak-hazel woodland whith some evidence of agricultural activity. No side ditches were present. Geophysical survey of the area immediately to the south of the excavated area revealed no evidence of the continuation of the road.
