Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation undertaken for Field 3352 off King Street, Middlewich for Fairclough Homes. The evaluation comprised three elements: - A re-evaluation of trenches and watching brief of a sewer pipeline originally done in June-September 1998. - Archaeological observation of engineering test pits (January 2000). - Evaluation trenches across Field 3552 (April 2000). The results of this work has shown that an area of Roman archaeology survives along the eastern side of the proposed development area to a depth 0.4m, whilst the western side of the field has little or no archaeological deposits. Along the eastern side of the field the deposits indicate a stratigraphy of three phases. The earliest features recorded, dating to the early second century, included pits and postholes. The main Roman deposit, dating to the mid-late second century, included clay floors and an east-west road. The latest features observed, dating to the late third/fourth centuries, comprised curvilinear wall slots.
