Abstract/Summary

Report detailing the results of an evaluation exercise to determine the nature and location of surviving archaeological remains prior to an extension to the east wing of Loushers Lane Special School, Warrington. The area is known to have been occupied during the Roman Period and previous archaeological discoveries have revealed parts of a substantial masonry structure, including a hypocaust, very close to the development site. This evalution comprised of the excavation of 3 trial trenches each measuring 1m by 2m. The results found in Trenches 1 were inconclusive, although disturbed Roman deposits were present. Trench 2 recovered no deposits of significance. However, the excavation of Trench 3, the furthest east of the trenches, revealed a single course of sandstone masonry, aligned north-south, with a clay floor abutting it on its east side. This is tentatively interpreted as the west side of one of the Roman buildings excavated in the 1930's
