Abstract/Summary
Archaeological evaluation undertaken in 1995 prior to a development to improve visitor facilities at the Walled Garden, Norton Priory, Runcorn. The garden is located in the grounds of an eighteenth century mansion, home to the Brooke family, which was constructed on the site of a twelfth century monastery. The monastery no longer exists but the walled garden, with modifications, survives well. Seven trial trenches were excavated and have revealed the remains of buildings and other features, mainly dating to the nineteenth century, do survive. There was also evidence to suggest seventeenth century, and perhaps earlier activity, close to the site.
