Abstract/Summary

As a result of proposals to construct a retail-store (Morrisons) with associated access routes and car-parking at the former Greenalls Brewery site, the Archaeology Service of Gifford and Partners Ltd were commissioned by Greenalls Group plc to undertake archaeological evaluation work in liaison with County Archaeologist (A.Tindall). At the time of evaluation the site was occupied by industrial buildings associated with the brewery rapidly being demolished. The site is one of known archaeological importance particulary in terms of Roman period remains. A total of 13 evaluation trenches were excavated and 8 trenches produced evidence of Roman finds or deposits in the form of beam slots, post/stake holes, a foundation slot and a large cut feature. The presence of worked flint indicates that earlier remains may also be present.
