Abstract/Summary

Archaeological desk-based assessment of a proposed development site to the north of Welsh Row, Nantwich, was undertaken in April 1995. The site is approximately 20.44 hectares in area and is located to the west of the River Weaver, the east of Malbank School and south of an area of agricultural land. The desk-based appraisal was supplemented with a brief surface inspection of the area. The research indicated that the majority of the land has been used as agricultural land, although there are several demolished buildings and ponds of the 18th and 19th centuries also within the development area. There are several recorded brine pits and salt-making sites in the surrounding area on the banks of the River Weaver and along the Medieval street of Welsh Row.
