Abstract/Summary

Archaeological excavation undertaken in May/June 1996 at Pewterspear Green, Stretton, Warrington in advance of a residential housing development. Trial trenching done in February 1996 had revealed the metalled surface of Kings Street Roman road. This excavation revealed a 90m length of the road. It proved to be constructed of three layers - a base layer of pebbles, a make-up layer of sand and a deposit of sandstone blocks and chips (which only survived in patches). On the western side of the road a shallow scoop was present, presumably excavated with the aim of draining the road and providing material for its construction. Beneath the road a buried land surface was present which took the form of a black, organic horizon, thought to be vegetation on the site when the road was constructed, and a grey, silty deposit, representing topsoil.
