Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment was produced in 1996 for a site, approximately 1.3 hectares in extent, at Castle Street, Northwich, which is proposed for residential development. As the site lies adjacent to a Roman Road and close to the focus of Roman settlement at Northwich, an assessment has been prepared drawing together the available archaeological, topographic and land-use information in order to assess the archaeological potential of the site.
Examination of available data indicates that the site does not contain any archaeological deposits of national importance or Scheduled Ancient Monuments. However, antiquarian reports of the discovery of Roman lead salt pans, although ambiguous in their locational details, may indicate the presence of a Roman salt working centre within the site. Development and re-development of the site since the late 1700s will undoubtedly have impacted and, in places, destroyed the archaeological potential of the site.
