Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in 1998 in advance of the construction of a roundabout. The area lies close to a Roman road between Stretton and Appleton Cross. The evaluation comprised a desk-based assessment, a geophysical survey and selective archaeological trenching.
All trenches provided evidence for human activity, although no conclusive evidence for occupation. Only Trench I produced well stratified deposits including a ditch containing pottery of thirteenth century date, which cut an earlier cut feature also containing medieval pottery. Trench II produced the largest assemblage of finds dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, primarilly domestic wares, potentially relating to a cottage marked on the Tithe Map of 1847. Trench III contained a two post holes, one containing a microlith core-trimming flake, the other a piece of flint debitage. A possible ditch was also observed containing sherds dating to the thirteenth century. In Trench IV and V a ditch feature contained two Roman sherds, also a post medieval sherd.
