Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 1998 during groundworks in relation to the residential development of Oulton Mill, Little Budsworth. The watching brief followed on from a desk-based assessment and building recording of the mill building, which identified a series of features of archaeological significance survived within the building and that a building may have occupied the site since 1272. Cartographic evidence locates a mill on the site in the mid-sixteenth century and there are documentary reference to the 'New Mill' by 1531. The watching brief monitored the excavation of a trench to the north of the road, it also monitored the restructuring of the mill building and the groundworks associated with the installation of services and construction of house foundations. The results demonstrated that although the site of Oulton Mill has been occupied since the medieval period, there is little archaeological evidence to support this.
