Abstract/Summary
An archaeological desk-based assessment and site visit were undertaken in 2001 of the area surrounding Uplands Farm, Northwich. The farm lies north of Northwich, in an area to the north of the River Weaver which has historically been subject to extensive salt extraction. Within the vicinity of the study area, two rock salt mines dating from the eighteenth century are known and a nineteeth century saltworks. Evidence of salt mining activities were still visible on site at the time of survey, comprising small pools of standing water and 'flashes' such as Witton Flash which has been subsequently used as a limebed.
