Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment was produced in 2000 for a site at the former Lookers Garage, Castle Street, Northwich proposed for residential development. The site lies adjacent to a Roman Road and close to the focus of Roman settlement in Northwich.
Examination of available data indicated that the site does not contain any archaeological deposits of national importance. However, antiquarian reports of the discovery of Roman lead saltpans, although ambiguous in their locational details, are thought to evidence a Roman salt working centre nearby.
Development and redevelopment of the site since the late 1700's have locally impacted the archaeological potential of the site. However, a series of land (and building) collapses in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which resulted in a number of flooded voids appearing on the site, may have completely destroyed the archaeological potential of the site.
