Abstract/Summary
A series of preliminary, unpublished reports on the programme of archaeological investigations undertaken at Lindow Moss following the discovery of the third bog body, Lindow III (CHER 1473/0/3), in 1987. Reports include:-
- A preliminary report (Rick Turner) of the 1987 excavations (see also SCH2720) which comprised the excavation of the spoil heap and surrounding area of peat in which Lindow III was found, also two trenches on sand islands within the area of the peat.
- An update (Rick Turner) following the find of further body parts (buttocks and legs, Lindow IV) just 15m from the find of the upper body of Lindow Man. Also, includes the results of radio-carbon dating of charcoal from trench 2 - 4980+/- 70 B.P or 3030 be (HAR 8875).
- A note on 'Other bog bodies in Britain & Europe' (Rick Turner).
- 'AMS Dating of Lindow III - a preliminary report' (Oxford): one sigma - cal. AD 140-320; two sigma - cal. AD 120-340. Thus dating Lindow III to the 2nd-4th centuries AD.
- 'The beetles associated with a bog body and monolith from Lindow Moss, Cheshire' (Mark Dinnin, Dept. of Archaeology and Prehistory, University of Sheffield). Analysis of peat samples taken from around the remains of Lindow III, also further samples taken from a monolith through the peat cuttings in the location from which the body is thought to have originated.
- Letters concerning the programme of research.
- Extract from report 'Pollen and Preliminary Plant Macrofossil Analysis of Peat Columns from Lindow Moss, Cheshire' (Nick Branch, AML Report 111/88). The full report is recorded separately as SCH8819.
- Lindow Moss: Pollen Analysis of Peats associated with Lindow III' (R.G.Scaife). Analysis of the peat samples to establish the stratigraphic context of the body.
In 1991, a seminar was held in Cardiff, organised by Rick Turner, to allow all the researchers invested in the bog body project to come together and present/discuss their findings (see SCH9543). Following this, The British Museum funded the production of a monograph which pulled together the different strands of research, this was published in 1995, entitled 'Bog Bodies. New Discoveries and New Perspectives' (see SCH4324).
