Full Description

A Grade II listed two storey timber frame building, with a stone slate roof building dating from 1900-1905. The house was built by W E Tower (1). This occupies the site of the former Portal Lodge, which was left to the Hon. Marshal Brooks by his brother James in 1900. The demolition of the old building started in the same year and the new building was finished by 1906. A little known architect called Walter E Tower was employed to design the building using many design aspects of earlier Medieval and Tudor courtyard manisons. The building is partially timbered and 16th to 17th century Swiss stained glass has been used in some of the windows. The glass was bought in a Munich sale of the glass from Lord Sudeley's Toddington Manor in 1911 (3). Full architectual record is in (2) and (3).
