Summary

Roman industrial features at Heronbridge civilian settlement. Excavations in 1930-31 on the east side of Watling Street roman road revealed various stone buildings, including a 25 meter north wall of one building with a paved floor, which was probably a workshop or shed. This building dates to around 100 -160AD. To the north and south are four furnaces or corndrying kilns. North of the first stone building was a second. The wall of which overlaid earlier industrial features. This building was probably later in date than the longer building to the south and was used up until the mid 3rd century.

Full Description

Excavations at Heronbridge 1930-31 by Dr J A Petch, on east side of Watling Street.Various stone buildings revealed, including north wall of one building 25.6m long, running E-W, with a paved floor-probably a workshop or shed.Date of building c.AD 100-160. To north and south are four furnaces or corndrying kilns. Nearly 5m north of the first stone building was a second stone building c.7m x 8m, with a doorway 3m wide on east side. On either side of the doorway the wall overlay earlier 'industrial' features and it may have been later in date than the longer building to the south. Probably use ended in mid 3rd century (1).
