Full Description
Roman road. Possible branch road running south-east from the Chester to Manchester road (route 7a) (RN: 844/1). First mentioned by Watkin, leading from Watling Street (i.e. 844/1), near Stamford Bridge and proceeding past Holme Street Hall (1). Observations in field drains seem to support this route. A layer of cobbles and sandstone c.5.5m wide at SJ 4703 6730 was bounded on the east by a ditch c.1.2m wide and at least 0.35m deep. The centre of the ditch was 18.3m west of the hedge bordering Lansdowne Road (Holme Street) and parallel to it (2) & (3).
