Monument record 255/2/2 - Moat or Ornamental Pond at Poole Hall

Please read our .

Summary

This L-shaped pond has was initially interpreted as two arms of a medieval moat. It has later been suggested that it is an ornamental pond forming part of the ornamental gardens and park at Poole Hall. In 2022, an early map of Poole hall from 1601 was identified during research by the Cheshire Gardens trust which provides further evidence for a moated site and building platform at this location.

JH White comments (16/08/1960) that 'The supposed moat appears to have been constructed as an ornamental pond, an opinion also held by the occupier of Poole Hall. It is an unlikely topographical situation for a moat and there is no evidence that it continued beyond its present limits'.
